SAVE A CLAY PROGRAM FOR LOW-INCOME WOMEN

Friends of Inspiration are asking for the public’s support in our crowdfunding campaign https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/save-inspirations-studio/  and for leads on potential partner agencies and funding opportunities.  Their campaign will raise funds for rent and studio supplies so the members can continue to access a creative space, generate income and maintain a sense of meaning and purpose.

As one member told them, “Inspirations saved my life.”

Inspirations Studio helps low-income women learn to craft ceramic goods and develop business skills, so they can earn supplemental income.  Through the process, the Studio works to facilitate the recovery of self-esteem, respect, and dignity, and create a community of entrepreneurs.  Inspirations was first established in 1994 as a craft collective for under-housed women in a converted church at 761 Queen West.  When the 761 Community Development Corporation closed in 2001, Inspirations was taken on by Sistering, which secured funding through the Toronto Enterprise Fund.   In 2016, the program lost its status as a social enterprise.  In short, the enterprise model demanded a more production-oriented approach and ultimately conflicted with the women’s individual creative expression, the program’s focus on entrepreneurial skill building, and the challenges of securing full-time employment as a craftsperson.  Bridge funding provided by the United Way will run out at the end of 2017.

Friends of Inspirations Studio is an informal group dedicated to promoting the work and goals of Inspirations Studio. We are members of the Toronto arts, financial, and business communities, who believe in social enterprise as a means of lifting women out of poverty, and artistic expression as a means of nourishing well-being.

Inspirations Studio is a one-of-a-kind program and has provided scores of women with a lifeline for 23 years. It would be a tragedy to let it come to an end in such a short time.  Thank you for your support and for spreading the word. Spring News May 19, 2017

Hello,

Spring is here! and thank goodness it is!
I’m just writing a short note to update you on some TBD happenings coming up this spring…

This Sunday I’m running the 10k in the Blue Nose marathon with the incredible Green Avengers! Yes that’s right, I’m raising funds for one of my favourite non-profit organizations, ECOLOGY ACTION CENTRE! My personal goal is to raise $500 for the EAC. Would you consider helping me and this awesome environmental org.? Any amount will help, be it big or small. Also, I’m having a draw to WIN one of my handmade ceramic mugs, all you have to do is donate and I’ll enter you into the draw – I’ll pick the lucky winner after the big race. Thank you in advance, you are so kind! CLICK HERE TO DONATE!

Our much anticipated seconds sale is happening Sunday May 28th 11am-2pm at Wonder’neath Studio, 2891 Isleville St. Halifax, NS – cash only. Come early!

Toast on the Coast Project
This past winter I had the privilege of taking Joan Bruneau’s ceramic course, Art of the Table at NSCAD U. For our final project we had to create a set or service for 4-6 people and document it in situation. I decided to re-create the camper cup and build crates to carry the cups in. I asked three friends to choose a drink, a toast and come hangout with me on the beach. We had four rounds of toasts, one for each of us. It was a spectacular day for the beach & I had so much fun making this project! I’m so grateful to everyone who helped me with this project…big thanks to: Bethany Riordan-Butterworth, David Walsh, Brendan Anckaert, Joan Bruneau, my classmates, Doug Bamford, Ken Lamb, Scott MacInnis and Jim Cameron. Thanks for watching.

Well that’s it for now. Thanks for stopping by my website. I hope you’re well & enjoying the season.

Warm wishes,
Therese

(((Midsummer News Flash!)))

Hello.

So many things to update you on….where to start? Hmmm.

Help please. I launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign!
I am so thrilled to have been accepted to attend the Clay Course at Haystack Mountain School of Craft on Deer Isle, Maine, from August 10th – 22nd. The course is a two‐week ceramic workshop with instructor David S. East, Chair of Ceramics at the Maryland Institute College of Art. I’m seeking help to fund half of my costs to attend a Clay Workshop at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. This workshop is a dream opportunity for me. I hope you will consider funding my campaign.

Indiegogo campaign Haystack

Recently I took a work-vacation from the ocean to the great lakes. I drove with a friend from Halifax stopping in Montreal first. Next stop was Kingston, On for my first outdoor show. It was a beautiful weekend and I was lucky enough to have my sister, brother and a couple of friends help me out for the weekend. My brother had a tent next to mine which made everything so much easier and a ton of fun. It was really great to meet new people and see a new city. Kingston is a super friendly place that really reminded me of Halifax in a lot of ways. After the 4-day show, I made my way up north with three of my dearest friends, that came from three different Canadian cities, for a camping trip. I stopped in Barrie to drop off some work to MacLaren Art Centre on my way to visit family in Wasaga Beach. I finished off the trip with lots of warm and fuzzy family visits all over Ontario.

Kids Pottery Class. Last week I taught a kids pottery class at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. The students learned all kinds of handbuilding techniques and even had a chance to try throwing on the wheel. I had to share this photo of a cat plant pot – a lot of the students loved cats! My kind of kids.

Youth Project – HFX Pride – Pink Triangle Studs
In collaboration with my super smart, super sweet friend Rena, I created and donated these pink triangle stud earrings for The Youth Project to give as gifts in exchange for a donation at Halifax Pride this year. If you missed your chance to score a pair of these beauties at the Pride Parade, you can still make a donation to The Youth Project and receive a pair. Here’s their link: http://www.youthproject.ns.ca/

I’m very thankful to Nicole Trask for featuring my work in the July issue of the Herald Magazine. Coincidentally, one of the newest studio members at Wonder’neath was also featured for their architecture design work! Thanks Herald Magazine!!
